The detour isn't easy because of just where it is and the geography.

Essentially, the best detour is through King Lake and Flowerdale via Healesville-King Lake Road, Whittlesea-King Lake Road, and then Whittlesea-Yea Road.

You could also consider the Maroondah Highway and sort of go up sort of through the Black Sphere up towards Alexandra.

But again, that'll add another couple of hours to the journey.
