Kingdom of Matamba

In the highlands and river valleys of 17th century West Central Africa, amid the encroaching shadows of transatlantic slavery, and European colonial expansion, one woman stood as an unyielding wall against conquest.

This is the extraordinary life of Queen Nzinga Mbande, of Ndongo and Matamba.

A sovereign whose brilliant statecraft, battlefield courage, and fierce independence redefined the possibilities of royal leadership.

Marked from her birth in 1582 by an omen that foretold a life of struggle and power, Nzinga grew up in the royal court of Kabasa, observing the delicate mechanics of Mbundu statecraft, military strategy and foreign diplomacy.

seizing the crown, navigating deadly court intrigues, family tragedy, and internal division to claim the leopard skin of sovereignty over Ndongo following her brother's death.

Guerrilla warfare and the Killumbo, her masterclass in adaptation following exile, where she embraced the feared warrior discipline of the in-Bengala, built mobile war camps, and offered sanctuary to runaway captives, turning the colonial slave economy into her greatest recruitment engine.

The conquest of Matamba, carving out a powerful new kingdom in the interior, forging a groundbreaking military alliance with the Dutch West India Company, and leading campaigns from the front lines into her 70s.

The Peace of the Matriarch, her final years as an undisputed stateswoman, forcing the Portuguese crown to formally recognize her nation's independence, reforming laws, restoring trade, and ensuring a peaceful succession for her sister.

Yeah, I was drinking wine.

That was Matamba.

Matamba was drinking wine, but I mean, yeah.

I mean, it's

free.
