Kinderhook

The GPS was never giving us the same directions from one place to another.

When it came to the time being weird, that was all over Vermont into Kinderhook area.

Because we drove over to Kinderhook, of course, to film there.

But between Bennington and Kinderhook, and then it even felt this way when we drove over to interview, um, Joseph Citro, who's in the Southeastern part of Vermont.

So a little ways away.

Um, all of that seemed like we'd see on the gps you know an hour or two hours and then 20 minutes would go by and you'd look at the gps and it would be like 58 minutes left or something like it literally was moving so slowly that there were points where all of us that were in the car would look at each other and we're like are we collectively losing our minds It makes no sense why this is happening.

But yeah, so that was it.

It was that as we were driving, the GPS would mess up constantly.

The schoolmaster, though, had a real man behind him.

In 1809, Irving stayed at the Kinderhook home of Judge William P.

Van Ness, and a Connecticut-born schoolmaster named Jesse Merwin was boarding there at the same time.

The two stayed friends for decades, and 42 years later, on February 12, 1851, Irving was still joking about the schoolhouse in a letter to Merwin.

Hmm, I never knew root veggies were so powerful.

Back in 1962, something unusual was floating in the woods of Kinderhook, New York.

Bruce Hallenbach was 10 years old at the time, playing in the forest behind his grandparents' house with his seven-year-old cousin, Chari, when they noticed something strange hiding behind a tree.

A bright blue blob-like creature seemed to be watching the kids.

Quickly, the two children decided to run back to their family's home.

Years later, when one of Bruce's friends described a strange encounter with a floating bell-shaped thing in the woods, he realized it must be the same creature.

Known by locals as the Kinderhook Blob.

This particular globular fellow comes from a long line of jelly-like beings encountered across the world, whether on the forest floor or floating eerily through the trees.

Irving never said he used the name from him.

He said he based his schoolmaster on a teacher from Kinderhook, New York.

The name itself is a joke.

Ichabod in Hebrew is Hebrew for without glory.

They have everybody, but in smaller towns, you're kind of like, oh my God, you are irreplaceable.

Do you know how many people in Kinderhook, New York want to work at a wine bar? Like I said, they're either retired or they're working remotely.

Some of them are going back and forth to the city every week.

There's just so few young people.

he was real too although the name comes from a revolutionary war officer washington irving met whose full name was Ichabod Crane.

And when Washington Irving was heartbroken, friends took him up into Columbia County to Kinderhook, where eventually President Martin Van Buren lived.

And there Washington Irving, to kind of distract himself, met with the schoolmaster, who described how he had been frightened off from courting a young Dutch-American woman living there.

And the story so captivated Irving, it became the seed for the legend of Sleepy Hollow.

And I had just a couple of fun facts I thought you might like.

Um, The author was actually in Kinderhook, New York, which is right outside of Hudson, visiting President Martin Van Buren, and they were friends.

And during that visit, right down the road is a one-room schoolhouse, and the author, I can't remember his name, the author met the school teacher, who was a man, and that is who Ichabod Crane is modeled after.

And then the story takes place in Sleepy Hollow, New York, which is about an hour and a half south of here.

Isn't he a DJ? A house DJ.

His hometown was called Kinderhook, which is in New York.

And his nickname was Old Kinderhook.

That was his nickname, Old Kinderhook.

Here come Old Kinderhook.
