There were investigations into major players in the industry, like De Beers, and in 2003, this led to the creation of a global certification standard called the Kimberley Process, which is used to verify that diamonds are conflict-free.

It's not a perfect system by any means, but one thing it did do was teach consumers to ask questions about where their diamonds come from, and crystals just don't have anything like that.

I mean, I've seen those bins of crystals in stores too, and, you know, it never really occurred to me to think about where they came from or how they got there.
