Kim NossalGUEST
think that one of the things that Jack is completely correct about is the fact that in the last 80 years or so, what we have essentially seen in Canadian-American relations is something that is absolutely lacking since Trump was reelected in 2024.

Kim NossalGUEST
And that is the notion of what we might think of as friendship in a North American context.

Kim NossalGUEST
I mean, the anti-Americanism that we can see persistently in Canadian politics from the very beginning, as you note, from 1775, when When British North Americans rejected the invitation from the Continental Congress to join in the Republican experiment.

Kim NossalGUEST
But one of the things that we've seen... basically eliminated by Trump is the idea of friendship between Canada and the United States.

Kim NossalGUEST
What we see instead is the emergence of a real animus in the the executive branch of the US, but in not only the White House, but all the executive offices.

Kim NossalGUEST
But also what we've seen is, in a sense, is a collapse of the notion of friendship in the Congress as well, in particular on the Republican side.

Colin RobertsonHOST
Kim, is the line between elbows up patriotism and self-defeating economic nationalism become pretty fine? Or do you think we can manage that?
