The Initiation (1984) - Summer Slasher Season
S
36:57Seb HopeHOST
She's probably actually the least evil person.
S
37:01Seb HopeHOST
she's a bitch but she's the least evil of probably all of the main sorority sisters none of them do anything as big maybe about the same as if I know what her name was we'll go with Victoria Vicky for the rest of them in Killer Pie she wasn't too bad apart from disliking one character mainly like targeting one character but that's pretty much where she is but again here we don't really get too much of her but I do like her death scene yeah when she's taken again we're there is a bit a nice bit of changing up weapons and stuff like that we had that a problem with that in their house on sorority road that it was all like very samey yeah and even with like killer party sadly that a lot of it although different it was all really cut off and felt a and stuff like that so this one feels like an appropriate Andy's been killed we know that Megan's out now looking for him she's like searching through there she goes into like what's a kind of a set up like a kind of a wooded area kind of it's made to look like and that's when we get obviously the hunter where he gets the butter yes And in the shadows, we can just mainly see like a body, but we can see the arms kind of pulling back a bow.
S
38:14Seb HopeHOST
She can't see it.
S
38:15Seb HopeHOST
And again, it's a clean death.
23 MINS LATER
S
61:36Seb HopeHOST
Yeah.
S
61:36Seb HopeHOST
Um, but generally I do think, um, yeah, I think I'd probably still put the initiation as my, my favorite of the season.
S
61:43Seb HopeHOST
I think I do like, um, I've enjoyed all of them in their odd kind of way I think across the board like Killer Party was a fucking insane mismatch of what the fuck's going on but it had it's fun kind of thing and there was some weird kind of context to Sorority House Massacre and House on Sorority Row might be the other one that's kind of the better one like the better of the two I think we started and ended with the best the best ones like there's parts to each of them but there's also parts to each of them that also doesn't totally work as well yeah I don't
R
62:18Rob KeirHOST
think there is a clear contender for me they both had a kind of
Killer Party (1986) - Summer Slasher Season
S
1:04SebHOST
welcome back to cast me to hell with me seb and me robbie and here we are with a continuation of our sorority summer slasher little saga we've got going on with killer party yeah 1986 yes
R
1:20RobbieHOST
another 1986 film yes i feel like this one definitely feels as if it's you know very end of the golden age of slashers you know it's oh yeah it's it's really struggling with it at some points
S
1:36SebHOST
this is i mean there are there are there are parts of this that i'm like oh actually this is kind of you know there's parts of this that then like done in other films like decade later kind of thing that are like oh yeah you're a bit ahead of your time it's messy but it's a little bit ahead of its time then there are stuff that's just like a blender of everything that came to the point like this is this is the end when they started to struggle this is literally this is like uh does demon possession slasher horror comedy yeah it's literally like a multiple of genres that are literally thrown into this film and squashed together With also the fact that it is technically, you know, it was going to be called Fool's Day or April Fool's Day, but it was released literally, it was going to be released just after April Fool's Day from a different studio.
S
2:28SebHOST
So they changed it to Killer Party, which you can tell right from the...
S
2:34SebHOST
April Fool's Day April Fool's and it's also this is like in that odd 1986 is that odd like this is the period when we started getting like where a lot of the slashes start to go more supernatural yeah so that you know we had stuff like you know after things like had started to become popular we had teen slashes and even sorority movies were popular but then you also had like supernatural based ones that started to come through and you had things like Fright Night that became popular and stuff like that that caused another boom and this is almost where it tries to say something like Fright Night and it tries to take the sorority slasher and it turns to like Black Christmas and tries to go let's just fucking mash that together and
R
3:15RobbieHOST
hope that something works well I was expecting it so when we kind of put this season together we looked at a few different films and we tried to get a bit of variety between like obviously have that slasher core sorority theme but in terms of storyline they all try to be a little bit different and when i read about this one which is about a group of sorority initiates who host some kind of like swearing in ceremony or initiation ritual at this haunted house yeah and this vengeful demon possesses them and starts slashing them making them kill each other I was thinking oh this is going to be very like Night of the Demons which does have a similar-ish story where a bunch of teens stay in this like former haunted house and they do a Ouija board and then one gets possessed and it starts to spread a bit Evil Dead-ish and I was expecting that from this but instead I kind of got like an hour of Porky's and then 20 minutes of I don't really know.
38 MINS LATER
S
41:53SebHOST
And you've got films like the start of the 80s, literally 1980s.
S
41:57SebHOST
Friday the 13th and then loads of horrors that followed that or any of the Friday 13th films with that but loads of horrors around that where they had some great gory special effects of people to get to the point where every death is just cut off does it just makes these films feel like oddly tame because let's be honest this is the kind of film where gratuitous gore is okay yeah well it can ruin some films and it makes them feel a little bit understated there are some films when the cutaway works because the story it works kind of with the story and it works with the tone of the film and it works with the style of the film so you can accept the fact that you're not seeing full on gore of someone's head being like split off or something like that or someone's head being taken off but with this kind of film this is sloppy horror this is 80s camp as hell horror it should have to make it into it like it would rise it up easily for anyone a star rating alone just by having a couple of shots of gore or death
Rawhead Rex (1986)
N
2:59Neal McLaughlinHOST
Like, you know, there have been some duds on this podcast and, you know, there's a difference between, like, a, like, a...
N
3:03Neal McLaughlinHOST
You and I were just talking off mic about Killer Party, which is a disaster in so many ways, but it's so entertaining and there's, like, so many things that are really, really good about it.
N
3:12Neal McLaughlinHOST
I did not feel that way about this movie.
N
3:14Neal McLaughlinHOST
