Chelsea Davis is in South Maui, an area prone to bad flooding.

I'm along South Kihei Road where it is really dark and overcast and gloomy and the wind is really starting to pick up now.

And I have to tell you, I spoke with residents and business owners in this area.

who are really bracing themselves for what's to come.

Now, this area specifically is really prone to flooding.

I'm on near the intersection of South Kihei Road and North Kihei Road, and that's because oftentimes it rains upcountry in Kula in East Maui, for example, and then all that rain comes down the mountain, down Haleakalā, through Kahului, and ends up here in South Maui.

And this area in particular, there's a bridge here that oftentimes it is the rain and the runoff can't go through the bridge.

It's not high enough for the water to flow through the bridge, underneath the bridge and into the ocean.

Emergency officials are watching roads that could flood or take a hit from high surf.

They're paying close attention to low spots along Honoapiʻilani Highway, including Kihei and Úkumehame, where waves have damaged the roadway before.

Crews also checked gulches in upcountry for debris that heavy rain could wash downstream.

Surprisingly, those gulches work pretty clear.

SO THE PROBLEM IS THAT THEY GOT VERY...

Flood-prone areas out towards Kihei.

And if the rain comes up at Mauka, well, they could get flooding rain as well.

Not so much of a rain event for Oahu or for Kauai.

While it could have stopped along the Hana Highway path, mileage shows it did not veer from the route.

The same day Kiara rented the car, she attempted to make a hotel reservation in Kihei, starting the next day.

from July 22nd to 29th, and she also booked a flight home on July 29th, 2019.

By all accounts, it appears she planned on being in Hana for just one night, returning to Kihei the next day, and then flying back to her home in San Diego.

We have not been able to find a hotel or camping reservations in Hana for that night, although it is possible she planned to find one when she arrived, or maybe she planned to sleep in her car, stated Chiara's family on a Facebook post.

Chiara's phone was last used on Wi-Fi at 11.04 am the day she disappeared.
