Kigali Innovation City

Today, you pass through the gates of what looks like an Asian master-planned development airlifted into the African highlands.

Manicured lawns, glass-walled buildings, a massive construction site full of cranes, banners proclaim Kigali Innovation City.

This is Rwanda's bet on tech, and it is by any reasonable measure an audacious bet.

According to the Rwanda Development Board, the Kigali Innovation City is a $2 billion project being built on 61 hectares inside Kigali's Special Economic Zone.

The official groundbreaking happened in September 2024.

The plan, per Africa 50, the project's lead infrastructure investor, backed by the African Development Bank, is that KIC will eventually house four universities, dozens of tech companies, start-up incubators, retail and hospitality facilities and what they're calling Digital Innovation Precinct.

Project 2 – Rwandair Expansion The national airline has been on a fleet-buying spree, opening new international routes including direct service to destinations like Doha, London and Mumbai.

The expansion is being financed through a mix of equity, debt and the planned Qatar Airways partnership.
