The UOC has been the target of a Zelensky government crackdown, which has involved kicking its clergy out of some churches and monasteries, including the historic Pechersk Lavra in Kiev, in favor of the Ukrainian state-backed Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

The UOC has been targeted and its priests have been imprisoned due to its historic links to Russia, though the UOC declares full independence from the Moscow Patriarchate following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, which it strongly denounced.
