Kidnapping

Right.

Kidnapping elevates false imprisonment to a much more severe felony by requiring an additional critical element.

Asportation.

And asportation means what?

If a defendant points an unloaded gun at a victim, it is not an attempted battery because of factual impossibility, but it absolutely is an intentional apprehension assault if the victim reasonably believes that gun is loaded.

False imprisonment is unlawful confinement without consent.

Kidnapping takes this a step further, requiring unlawful confinement plus either aspartation, which is just legal jargon for movement, or concealment.

But watch out for the incidental movement rule.

And it's very intimately bound up.

So, striking your parent Kidnapping.

Kidnapping is one of the crimes that is punishable by death in the law of Moses.

So kidnapping was virtually unknown in Hebrew society.

Cursing your parent.

Nothing there, except her phone number and two impossible words.

Kidnapper wanted.

Kidnapper? And then what? Dawn arrives before I grow the balls to call.

Still damp from restless dreams, I clutch the payphone, convinced I'm still asleep when Ivy's gauzy voice whispers hello.

I tell her I saw her flyer.

[laughs]

Kidnap someone from a well-guarded installation.

Yeah.

Hmm.

I'm trying to think which of the Thief games now lets you kidnap someone from a well-guarded installation.

I didn't even know there was kidnapping in Thief.

I mean, there's literally a mission called Kidnap, I think, in Thief 2, so we'll go with Thief 2.

Oh, wow.

I'm your host, David Reese.

[intro music] Our main story today is about virtual kidnapping.

In 2017, the Associated Press reported on a troubling rise in virtual kidnapping scams across the United States.

Though the type of crime itself had long occurred in Mexico and the southwestern United States, uh, particularly in cities like Los Angeles and Houston, that was changing.

More often, the scams were reaching deeper into the US, and the details of each scam could be terrifying.

Her daughter had not actually screamed, and the criminals speaking to Sobel were simply lying.

Still, they'd made off with thousands of dollars.

Virtual kidnapping may sound bizarre, as there's hardly a virtual element.
