Khao Lak

The shift in the sea floor pushed up the ocean surface, generating a wave that raced towards the coast.

In Khao Lak in southern Thailand, people started filming the strange sight of the water being sucked away down the beach.

start by asking you, what were you doing on the 26th of December 2004? Chances are you were waking up after Christmas day, turning on the news and seeing that there was a tsunami, a large tsunami that hit multiple countries around Southeast Asia, including Thailand.

Khao Lak was one of the worst affected areas.

And that's where we are now.

We have made it to Khao Lak.

I've come to Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Memorial.

I'd be running for the hills, man.

Also, because we visited Khao Lak in Thailand that was wiped out by the tsunami in 2004.

Yeah, very surreal.

When I was 14, I was living in Chiang Mai, Thailand, when the Boxing Day tsunami struck the southwestern coast of that country, devastating multiple nations, killing thousands and thousands of people and eliminating all kinds of coastal communities.

And while I lived about 2,000 kilometers away, about four months after the tsunami, I joined a team of volunteers, as a 14-year-old, working with Habitat for Humanity to rebuild homes in the coastal village, a fishing village called Khao Lak.

And goodness, when you hear on the news a natural disaster has occurred and just annihilated somewhere, like annihilation is so real.

It's like you can't imagine the destruction.
