John Joe Monroe, 87, of Glenwood, Missouri, formerly of Kewanee, passed away on Saturday, September 19th at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri.

He was born on July 19th, 1939, in Nichols, Iowa, the son of Lee and Margaret Jane Brown Monroe.

John had been married to Patricia Carney.

Survivors include his two daughters, Sheila Lorenzen of Colchester, Illinois, and Kelly Wilkie of Kewanee.

His sister, Helen Hubbell of Rockville, Maryland, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren with one on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings, Lee, Clinton, Robert, James, Eileen, Ruby, and Marilyn.

John graduated from Kewanee High School in 1957, served his country in the Army National Guard.

One great location that we were able to visit where something kind of interesting happened was the Kewanee Jail Museum.

Mm-hmm.

And when we stopped there, we were featuring it as an oddity, and it's featured as an oddity in our book right now.

Kewanee is a great little lakeside town just at the base of Door County, uh, the, the peninsula, so I believe it's, uh, an oddity in our peninsula section of the book.

And when we got there, the location was, they were familiar with their ghost stories, they had been for a very long time, but they hadn't invited, you know, ghost hunting teams or investigators in for well over half a decade.

I think it was seven or eight years at that point.

You know, this place was an incredibly busy jail for a really long time.
