Mark Teixeira, Kevin Youkilis, and Darren Erstad were all among the best of their era, and all of them converted to the position.

This might seem discouraging that it's seemingly required for a player to begin at a more difficult position, then slide down the defensive spectrum towards the comparatively easy first base.

There's another way to look at it, however, which is that most baseball teams throughout history have had a make player into first baseman button, and they've had to mash it from time to time.
