But there have been a lot of recordings that the FBI seized from Andy Duong's phone, including a video that appears to show Juarez talking about payments that the Duong's Supposedly, he says, made to individuals in exchange for getting help with getting the contract with the city of Oakland, their recycling contract years ago, recorded phone calls between Andy Duong and city officials, including Chiang Tao.

And the phone calls appear to have been recorded without the official's knowledge.

So they're very candid and they appear to be very revealing as to these seemingly really close relationships between Andy Duong and elected officials um the other interesting thing like you mentioned is that there's going to be quite a few current and former elected officials and city staffers who are expected to testify in this trial so we don't know what's going to come out we've had two days of witness testimony so far the first witness was lee hansen who is tau's former chief of staff and you know i mean she saw a lot that went on behind closed doors and had a lot of interesting things to say

Pretty soon after Tao was indicted, it was, I mean, at the time, Barbara Lee was running for mayor and a number of other candidates in the special election to replace Tao after she was recalled.

And I definitely got the sense that pretty much every, you know, elected official, politician distanced themselves from Tao.

As, you know, different evidence has been filed in this case, we've kind of gotten the sense that that might not be the full picture because, you know, like I said, there's been recorded phone calls between Andy Duong and Kevin Jenkins or Nicky Fortunato Bass that seem like, well, you know, they seem a little bit, you know, they have close working relationship or at least are on friendly terms.

That, to me, seemed like maybe the Duongs do have a much more constant presence in Oakland government more than I think most Oakland city officials would maybe admit once the indictment was filed.

Well, if you think about some of the things that we've learned through some of the evidence that has come out just in the weeks leading up to the trial, including the videos and the conversations that we have where Andy is just filming all of this, where Mario Juarez is talking about bribing city officials to get that initial contract in 2015 for California Waste Solutions.

The fact that there are contacts between Andy and sitting members of the city council, including Kevin Jenkins.

You've got to wonder, why is it only Shangy that's getting picked up on all this?

So far, Randy, how many times anyone who watches Gotham Oakland knows that that I believe that Carol Fife is heavily involved.

Okay, so the funding contradiction.

On January 19th, we were talking about that phone call between Kevin Jenkins and Andy Duong, correct?

And that's an interesting one.

When you talk about some of the former members of the Oakland City Council, like the ones that voted on this California Waste Solutions contract in 2015, that on tape Mario Juarez says everyone got bribed with a duffle bag full of money, you gotta wonder why Nikki Bas isn't being charged, why Rebecca Kaplan isn't being charged, or some of the other current members of the city council, like Kevin Jenkins, who Andy Dong wanted to have a yacht party for, or Carol Fife.
