Kenora

Anyway, started seeing the D-Rangers around once I started following this next guy around and seeing him all over the place.

I saw the D-Rangers play with him in Kenora and a bunch of times here in Winnipeg and a bunch of other places.

That was definitely when I fell into the Fredhead world as well.

Alicia was a woman and I was a boy.

They are getting questions at the door, I imagine, and in forums about these sorts of things.

I suspect there's more in southern Ontario than there will be in Kenora, just because of the impact, the relative impact of these things.

And the knee jerk reactions to what's happening in the United States and what the president is talking about isn't going to do us any good in the long run.

It's not doing us any good in the short run either, other than we're trying to get our own pound of flesh out of this.

Can you share with us, Glenn, I guess when this all started to break and how this looked like in your day?

Well, in my day, I was away in Kenora chairing the Ontario Chiefs of Police meeting with the executive.

And when the plane, we didn't see the first plane go in.

We didn't, the TVs weren't on at that time.

Glenn, how concerned were authorities even, you know, as far as federal authorities, did they contact you about concerns about the Ambassador Bridge and the Renaissance Center possibly being targets that day?

No, I didn't have anything on that.

Now, when I was in Kenora at the time, so I started, we had to get permission for me to fly.

We had to have a plane sent down so people, the chiefs could come back home.

I have a lot of empathy.

As a child in Kenora, I stole for food because we had no choice to do that.

There's this lack of food in foster homes, my home, residential school.

So we'd have to steal for food to survive.

Uh, I started traveling up to Canada as a teenager, uh, living in Minneapolis, driving 24 hours up into Manitoba, past The Pas, to fish at, uh, Reed Lake and a l-little lake called Lake McCrossin, where we crazily portaged our fishing boats through over beaver dams, over a hill, into this little lake.

I'm not quite sure why my dad thought we had to drive 24 hours To get good fishing, 'cause for the last 40 years, I've been making annual trip up to Lake of the Woods, and I've got a place, Pipestone Point Resort, uh, just south of Kenora, and I've enjoyed shore lunch and chomping on your, your walleye for virtually every year in the last 40 years.

Yeah, my, my trips to, uh, you know, the wonderful national parks, Banff, Jasper, um, Whistler, Blackcomb, uh, you know, always in terms of just getting the, the accommodations set, talking to people, you know, being greeted and, and s- you know, th- those individuals who running the resorts, just the kindest people.

The, the...

You know, you meet a person and there's another story of another person that's completely unrelated that led me down the path where I am now.

They saw me play 20 years ago in a little bar in Kenora and they got me gigs in Ottawa and other places because they liked what I did.

So the story I'm actually leading up to with all this preamble is that when I moved out here 16 years ago, I started making a record and I wanted something that was different because I was trying to reestablish a career and make a name.

So I found this old Mississippi John Hurt number that wasn't really well known but was just right for someone doing a nice version of it and I thought I could do it so I put it together, I recorded it and it didn't do a whole lot in Canada but in the UK it caught fire and I was all of a sudden touring and headlining festivals in the UK because I had recorded this song.

It was only like three, 400 people, no running water or power in one of your first homes.

What was it like growing up there? Like when I think of small town Canada, I think of like Kenora where I am.

This is like next level, small community.

Yeah.

I'll have to talk to you about this more in the future.

I'm running for municipal counselor.

And obviously as a counselor, I don't have any, any say over community, but we are, we have a lot of partnerships with communities and we have about eight surrounding Kenora.

And some of them are some of the more difficult communities in all of Canada.
