Paul Humphrey is worth a moment too.

He was a Los Angeles studio drummer who had recorded with Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell, and who did sessions for Fantasy, which is likely how he crossed paths with Merle.

A few years after his time with Garcia, he became the drummer on the Lawrence Welk television show.

For me personally, I value clarity above almost any other thing musical parameter um and but then also again um you want things to have initiative i love that word initiative you want things to have momentum and and i think sometimes you know adding some some complexity can can help to do those things as well so yeah i try to balance those in my own way and i think we i think we did a good job i'm happy about it

Now, if we look back at your time studying under Kenny Burrell at UCLA, beyond the technical lessons, what's the single moment or maybe piece of advice from him that stayed with you and that kind of still hits you in the chest when you're sitting alone at the Keys trying to figure out who you are as an artist?

Yeah.

You know, studying under Kenny Burrell was really, really special because You know, it's funny.

The woman known as the Queen of the B3, Shirley Scott, with guitar player Kenny Burrell, to whom they call it Stormy Monday.

Shirley Scott was an American jazz organist.

Her music was noted for its mixture of bebop, blues and gospel elements.

Today's tune came from the album that came out under both their names, Shirley Scott and Kenny Burrell, Travelin' Light, which came out in 1964.

So they're Hammond B3 organ, guitar and drums trios.

Artists like Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell.

When she heard those artists, everything changed for her.

So the record's called So Delighted.

So as a guitar player, you grow up, you kind of come up hearing guitar, organ and drum trios, which kind of becomes known as the organ trio sound.

And it's a big part of the guitar sound.

A lot of my favorite guitar players, Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, of course, came up through organist bands.

Jimmy Smith, especially, is very well known.

And then the next year, as you know, we came to the UK, we played these gigs, stayed with Barbara, came up to see you guys.

I slept on your living room floor, I think next year, Kenny Burrell records.

And, and it just kept us going.

It kept fueling it.

And the name of the cut is entitled Why Was I Born? Ask Your Mother.

And it features Jimmy Smith on organ, Stanley Turrentine on tenor sax, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Donald Bailey on drums.

An all-star lineup indeed, I would say.

And before that, you heard music from Jimmy Smith's House Party.

House Party, The Sermon, and Softly as a Summer Breeze.

The last of which wouldn't be released until 1965, and the album featured Smith with two different trios, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Philly Joe Jones on drums, as well as two tracks with Eddie McFadden on guitar and Donald Bailey on drums.

Overall, amazing piece, really excited to get into it.

And on these particular sides, we are treated to a facet of Jimmy's personality that I have always found particularly attractive.

The more relaxed groove with long-established popular songs, especially ballads, prominent in the choice of material.

On four of the six tracks, Jimmy is supported by Kenny Burrell and Billy Joe Jones, both old friends.

Kenny has been a Smith Studio mate on several previous occasions, notably for Blue Note Album's House Party, The Sermon, and the memorable Midnight Special.
