That same day, the 24th of May, was the day of the wayside murders which caused consternation in the province and disconcerted the UWC.

Andy Terry, the head of the UDA, and Ken Gibson, the head of the UVF, had ordered their members not to use violence repeatedly.

They had clearly ordered them to leave Roman Catholic-owned bars, especially those in Roman Catholic areas, absolutely alone.

This was mostly followed in Belfast, Portadown, and in the industrial belt east of the Ban.
