Kel Carruthers

And so, uh, and they were simple.

This was why I was so attracted to them, because when Kel Carruthers learned that his boy had not qualified first in 250 at Daytona, uh, 1976, he was a very busy man in those years because he was supposed to do dirt track as well.

I'm sure that he heaved a sigh and said, "Right, take 20 millimeters out of the head pipe, 25 thousandths off the head, recut the, uh, water seal groove, and we're going to, um, raise the exhaust ports a millimeter and widen them a millimeter on either side." And he could do it in, in, in, you know, after work and still have dinner.

This was wonderful for the privateer, and you used to hear die grinders humming long into the night as people who had wrecked their, [chuckles] wrecked their good cylinders were preparing new ones.
