How did it come about?

Sure.

Well, the American Foundation for the Blind is a large organization that works on access and inclusion and opportunities for people who are blind or deaf-blind or deaf.

Helen Keller herself worked with this organization decades ago as she grew into her mode as a public figure internationally.

And they have been, as I said, working on opening opportunities, doing research, breaking down barriers, all kinds of things for generations.

And because Helen Keller's connection with AFB is a longstanding part of their identity, they created in the 1990s an award called the Helen Keller Achievement Award, that recognizes people who either are living with a disability or work to improve opportunities for people with disabilities.

And they select usually two individuals and one organization, one company or establishment each year to honor with the Helen Keller Achievement Award.

Well, we all like school stories, so tell us something that really happened when you were teaching at school.

What topics do you consult on for people?

The consulting role varies quite a bit.

Let me give you one example of a unique and cool consult that I did.

I intersected with some folks who were putting on a regional healthcare clinic for medical workers, excluding nurses and doctors, so everybody else.

So EMTs, paramedics, hospice workers, etc.

And what they wanted is some advice and support as they created materials for how to work with patients who have disabilities in a more effective and compassionate and respectful way.

So that relationship began with me speaking to at a conference where those folks were gathered.
