Katharine Drexel

Um, or other times when women wanted to be missionaries and the bishop said, "No, women shouldn't be missionaries." Or women wanted to be active religious and, and they said, "No, you can't be active religious because you should be in a cloister." Um, and- That, so that and also, like, especially later on when we get to, um, mission work in the Americas, uh, these kinds of things, or in, in Asia, um, a lot of Black indigenous women, Black and in- indigenous women wanted to join religious orders, and they were prevented actually by the women in the religious orders.

Um, so this isn't to say that, like, women are completely innocent either, but it really surprised me that, like, Katharine Drexel, I believe...

Um, I think it was her order.

So Katharine Drexel, Frances Xavier Cabrini are kind of the same person in my mind, and Elizabeth Ann Seton also.

They were, like, wealthy American women that...

Although I guess Cabrini was Italian and probably not super wealthy.

Anyway, they're kind of the same person in my mind, so I'm trying to find [laughs] who was.

Well, I actually, uh, came into it, or I should say I backed into it.

I was originally, I like doing work on women, as you can see from Catherine Drexel.

When I was in grad school, almost all of my papers I would center on some woman or another.

And so I was going to do a, a biography of Cl- uh, Clare Boothe Luce.
