I just loved your voice on that.

Yeah.

And y- what a sweetheart.

He messaged.

He was like, "Des, what hotel are you guys at? I wanna send something nice for Kara." And I was like, "Yo, we, like, booked these super late, so all we could do was a suite."

We have talked about your work on the show a lot with our previous guests.

We've talked to Allyson Felix, Mary Cain, Kara Goucher, Alicia Montaño, all of whose stories you helped tell in The Times.

Really powerful and important work, so it's so nice to have you on.

It's so nice to talk to someone who has helped tell those stories for years and years.

So either associate with the planning and lean into that or dissociate and distract yourself.

Another tip on dealing with this one is still from Kara Goucher herself.

She talks about this in the Strong book, her book that talks about gratitude journaling, which is a really, really good book.

Also helpful with a lot of these mental things if you want to go pick it up.

So I thought that was interesting.

But then when I was talking to my wife Maddie about this, she was like, "You know, this is actually really interesting, because didn't they sponsor, like, Kara Goucher towards the tail end of her career when she was, like, really taking a stance against Nike and everything? And, like, they had Meb, like, two of, like, the, the golden people of our sport, and now they go and sign Shelby Houlihan." I was like, I was like, "Oh, you're right.

There is some dynamics there.

I wonder what Kara thinks of that." Because, yeah, that's actually, that's actually kind of interesting.

Yeah.

And then it just kept multiplying, so I, I almost feel like with Kara Goucher and the super shoes, like she was right on the cusp-

Mm-hmm, yeah

... and lost out to super shoes.

It's like, I mean, it is good to like, these books are not all the same.

I mean, I texted Kara Goucher once when she was back on relay around when her book, her most recent book came out and she was like, people would be like, oh, man, loved your book.

Like, I was so looking forward to it.

Or like, man, I love that book.

Um, all that work that I did on, on maternity rights for athletes, like, that was just my own, like...

You know, I was talking to Kara Goucher and Lauren Fleshman one day in the cafeteria, and they were like, at the tier cafeteria at The Times, and they were, "Oh, by the way, like, secretly, this is like...

Like, I know you're writing an article that's like how great it is that we can do this, but here's what it actually was like." Um- Uh, that was just me kind of being like, "I have this platform.

I have this ability to pursue this.
