Kapalua

They had had four projects, all of which failed due to the savings and loan crisis or other different reasons.

And the only thing that they had going at the moment was the development of Barton Creek in Austin, Texas, and the plantation course at Kapalua.

That's it.

So they really had no credentials in a major way other than Ben Crenshaw's name and the fact that they would take Dick Youngscap's call because in the back of their minds, they had heard about this potential for land somewhere in Nebraska and were captivated by it.

And I remember this.

This was when I was first getting interested in golf and golf courses.

I think it was the first tournament of champions that was held at Kapalua.

And I heard that the designers were Coren Crenshaw.

So it's a, it's a resort course.

So if you want to compare it, you know, Cocoa beach where they play the Puerto Rico open Corrales Punicana, uh, for that, for that championship, uh, The old plantation course at Kapalua, just think of kind of longish, resortish type of courses.

TPC Craig Ranch, another one, the AT&T Byron Nelson, and these courses that kind of do favor the bombers with the wide fairways and the non-pedal rough, even though last year... which brings some pain back.

Another runner-up, when I had Aldridge Potguider here, and he was the biggest hitter on tour, led the event, and he's in the playoff with Brian Campbell, by the way.

And even in an easier, calmer year than before, I took another percentage away from around the green and moved that towards putting and distance.

Comp courses real quick, and we will have, I break this down like a lot more, I break this down a lot more in depth in the article, but some of the comps that I was looking at, Vidanta, Viarta is next to, for me, Corrales Punta Cana, kind of makes sense, Tropical Past Palm, Driver Heavy, El Cardinal, Kapalua, TPC Creek Ranch, Memorial Park, the Dunes Club at Myrtle Beach, and even a little Black Desert, which ends up being a little more accuracy over distance because the penalties are worse at Black Desert, but still pretty big fairways and off the tee adjustment.

And then here I have a very low course history correlation.

don't think you need to see this golf course to figure it out.

And then I like to add like a few couple things that kind of categorize my course fit.

Um, and, So I did fall swing.

And then the other one I did was I put together a lot of these past column golf courses don't have strokes gain, but I added like all the stamp slower, you know, like Kapalua, some of the slower grainier Bermuda.

These guys perform way better on slow greens than their baseline.

Then Tahoe.

Should I do Kapalua and the others as well? Kapalua, TPC San Antonio, and Corrales.

I got to combine these.

And then, oh my God.

That's when you get to see...

Other than Kapalua, that's when you kind of get to see some of the bigger names at the very beginning of the year.

And usually a great event, great field.

Again, maybe not the best course in the world, but to me, a little bit, I just have fond memories of watching this early morning, late night, whatever it is, at the beginning of every European Tour season.

Those changes.

So one of the big things that popped up right around the time you and I were podcasting a couple weeks ago was the Lote Championship, which has been played in Hawaii, is moving to Kapalua, which, as a reminder, the men, the PGA Tour, have just left Kapalua.

The Hawaii swing is no longer happening at the beginning of the year.

And the LPGA swept in and said – Pro golf needs to be played at Kapalua.

We're going there.

And they paired it right up against Nenea.

So that's a big percentage of miles cut off that I know that the LPGA is very proud of.

So the Lotte is a big help there.
