And there were patients who had kidney failure in the small hospital in Kampen in Holland.

And he had read articles by Johns Hopkins physicians in the early part of the 20th century describing theoretical ways to perform dialysis.

And he actually operationalized dialysis using crude homemade materials, a bathtub, a metal cylinder which he designed.
