How to Become an Elite Hacker: A Pen Tester’s Career Roadmap
P
0:00Phil WileyGUEST
one of the things i really liked about mr robot is one of my favorite shows is that the hacking techniques and stuff they're using were pretty realistic and so they're actually using real world hacking tools because you see some of the other movies they always have the coolest looking browsers and things are a lot different than what they're in the real world and some of the things were just not realistic and as an ethical hacker you kind of laugh at but mr robot was really cool because they're using stuff like kali linux they're using some of the hack 5 hacking hardware like the wifi pineapple and the rubber duckies and that kind of stuff.
P
0:28Phil WileyGUEST
So it was really kind of cool to see them using actual technology really being used in the field.

Not all ethical hackers are pen testers, but all pen testers are ethical hackers.

It is.

The smarter move to maintain stability is utilizing pre-bundled security distributions like Kali Linux or Remnux.
S

It's like rather than running to the hardware store to buy every single wrench, screwdriver, and diagnostic computer individually and just hoping they all fit your tool belt, you just buy a fully stocked mechanics garage where everything is already hanging on the pig board, calibrated and ready.
S
10:57speaker_3HOST
I love that analogy.

And so, you know, I did a lot of work for that, did a number of intelligence related missions in Iraq and put Iraq for a number of times, but really found a home in cybersecurity.
D
6:41Dave KennedyGUEST
And, you know, while I was in the military, I was part of this IRC chat group called Remote Exploit, which eventually turned into Backtrack Linux, which eventually turned into Kali Linux.
D
6:50Dave KennedyGUEST
And, you know, became really good friends with Mutz and the whole group over there.
D

And, you know, had my hacker handle.

So many things in Linux are just there.
E
50:24Eric SironHOST
And if your security team is less aggressive than mine, then you can use like Kali Linux, which has a lot of pen testing tools in it.
E
50:32Eric SironHOST
Now, if I start pulling down the Kali packages, my phone starts ringing.
E
50:36Eric SironHOST
What are you doing? And yeah, I don't need that kind of stress in my life.
E
50:40Eric SironHOST
So yeah, I don't really do that.

right you pick it and be like it live then What's the tools that you're using? Do you use Kali Linux or do you use any sort of specific operating system tools that you could think of?
N
27:32Nathaniel BedassieGUEST
So for ease of use and just working out the box, because I mean, we have so much things to do.
N
27:39Nathaniel BedassieGUEST
Just for ease of use and simplicity's sake, we do use Kali Linux.
N
27:42Nathaniel BedassieGUEST
I mean, some people like to use Arch and like to build their own distro from scratch.
N
27:46Nathaniel BedassieGUEST
And some people like to use ParaArt on it.
A
28:29Andre CharlesHOST
I know that.
A

But I know Kali just is a one-stop shop.

So to actually read that file and see what permissions a suspicious app is asking for, you cannot rely on just unzipping it.
S
12:23speaker_3HOST
You need specialized reverse engineering tools, often run in a secure, isolated environment like a Kali Linux virtual machine, to decode that binary data back into standard text.
S
12:32speaker_2HOST
Ah, I see.
S
12:33speaker_2HOST
So simply renaming it to a zip file gets you into the lobby of the building, but you still need specialized translation tools to actually read the documents sitting on the desk.

And that used to take a skilled operator that had some Kali Linux skills or Python chops or an understanding of the internet infrastructure.
D

Now it's basically over a prompt and a cup of coffee and it's done.
D

Shantanu, can you perform a testing of this device? So here we are having fun.
S

So what's funny in here, most people think hackers start by operating Kali Linux and aggressive typing on a keyboard.
S

Then when green screen will come because Hollywood has done a fantastic job convincing everyone that hacking starts with green text and dramatic music.

Understanding how attackers achieve this initial access and maintain control, it's very important for defenders to implement your robust endpoint protection, secure network configs, and comprehensive user awareness programs.
A

To illustrate these concepts, we'll be working with Kali Linux VM as the attacking system.
A
