It was a guaranteed wage of £25 a week for 16 hours of stage time at the resort's rock and calypso ballroom.

After the summer residency finished in September of that year, the Hurricanes headed to Hamburg to replace Derry and the seniors at the Kaiserkeller Club, where they played five or six 90-minute sets every day, alternating with the Beatles.

The two bands would also indulge in competitions to see who could make the most noise.

As one clubgoer described it, the two bands commandeered the Kaiserkeller stage for more than seven uninterrupted hours.
