Reportedly, while they were there, on August 12th, a Sunday, Robert and Paul spoke over the phone.

According to what Robert later told journalist Justin Lum, Paul wanted to know whether he could drive from his dad's home in Mesa to his grandmother's home in Globe to visit for the day.

He promised he'd be back by the following day for the start of football practice.

By that point, Paul had his driver's license and Robert had bought him his own vehicle, a silver Chevy pickup truck, so Paul could make the drive on his own.

In early 2026, he participated in an interview with journalist Justin Lum in which he recounted his recollection of these events.

Other sources of information, such as an article published in the Arizona Republic several years after Paul's disappearance, seem to paint a somewhat different picture.
