I don't know why sometimes I get frightened But getting into the band and becoming one of the defining voices was two different jobs.

By the time the Split Ends reached their album True Colors in 1980, their music had become more direct.

The personality was still there, but now they had these wonderfully immediate songs to carry it.

Producer David Tickle gave the album this sharp, energetic sound, and one of Neil's songs supplied the breakthrough.

What's interesting is the song opens sounding as if something's bothering it.

But the voice didn't disappear.

Now, Tim left the Split Ends in 1984 to pursue a solo career.
