Just as I Am

Amen.

Our hymn is Just As I Am.

It was written in 1835 by Charlotte Elliot.

It is a fabulous hymn in which we are reminded that we come to the Lord just as we are in wheelchairs, whether we hear well, whether we see well, however we come, we come before the Lord just as we are.

Amen.

for me, and that thou bidst me come to thee, O love of God, my love.

Just as I am, I'm waiting not to rip thy soul To thee whose blood hath been cleansed with salt, O Lamb of God, my God.

Just as I am, thou dost the world.

Somebody asked me the other day, Lisa, do you do an altar call? And for those of you that went to Billy Graham, you would know what that meant.

That means he plays Just As I Am 100 times, and everybody comes up if they want to ask Jesus in their heart.

And I said, I don't do that.

And the reason for it is because I think there's a lot of false... belief system going out there that says, all I have to do is pray a prayer to ask Jesus in my heart and I'm good to go.

It has proved to be an inspiration, 2000 standing at the threshold of a new year.

At first she rudely resented this, but afterward repented and asked him how she might find the way to Christ.

He replied, Dear Charlotte, cut the cable.

It will take too long to unloose it.

cut it it is a small loss anyway you must come to christ just as you are and so just as she was she came and found the peace that passeth all understanding enabling her to bear her illness with bravery twelve years later while every one about her was busy preparing for a bazaar she was burdened with the thought that as an invalid she was utterly useless herself and brooded over this through the long hours of the night but the next day her faith prevailed and remembering the words of dr milan which brought about her conversion she took her pen and wrote the wonderful hymn beginning just as i am without one plea later in the day mrs h v elliott entered the room to tell her how the bazaar was progressing and while there she read the hymn and took a copy of it THE GREAT HYMN WAS THUS GIVEN TO THE WORLD, AND OUT OF HER HELPLESSNESS CHARLOTTE ELLIOTT WROT A BLESSING TO MANY SOULS THAT HAVE BEEN GUIDED INTO SALVATION AND WONDERFULLY STRENGTHENED BY HER HYMN.

read by larry wilson almost persuaded and now to believe by philip bliss in the year a d sixty two a certain roman citizen was cast into prison because of a multitude of accusations against him at his hearing before festus he appealed to caesar for justice and was held for trial at rome shortly afterward he was asked to state his defense before king agrippa and bernice who were then visiting festus that defense uttered by paul for he was the accused prisoner is found in the twenty-sixth chapter of the acts of the apostles and is one of the greatest addresses to be found in holy scriptures at the conclusion king agrippa said to paul almost thou persuadest me to be a christian to which paul replied i would to god that not only thou but also all that hear me this day were both almost and altogether such as i am except for these bonds a clergyman by the name of brundage was once preaching upon this subject and concluded his sermon with these solemn words he who is almost persuaded is almost saved but to be almost saved is to be entirely lost.

Philip Bliss was present and was so deeply impressed by these words that he wrote one of his most helpful hymns based on the phrase almost persuaded as a direct result of this sermon.

This is the way it is.

Just as I am without one plea.

but that thy blood was shed for me and that thou bidst me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

And this is the most important thing now, John.

Just as I am, though tossed about, with many a conflict, many a doubt, fightings within and fears without, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

John, I say to every doubter, don't wait until your doubts are resolved to come to Christ.

You come with your doubts, but you come to the only one qualified to save you.

Lord, I pray that you simply long to do the things that are going to bring glory and honor to your nation.

Too tired to do anything else, she reached for pen and paper and wrote it down as a prayer.

just as I am, without one plea.

She had no strength to offer and no good deed to point to, just herself and her need.

That poem became a hymn, just as I am, and it has drawn more people to God than she could have ever helped at any fundraiser.

Look at what Charlotte had to work with that afternoon.

No strength, nothing to bring.

Her name was Barbara.

It was time to play Just As I Am.

She didn't really know Just As I Am, so she played what she knew.

She knew Just A Closer Walk With Thee.

That's what she knew.

That's what she played.

When I got done preaching, I did what all Bible-believing Baptist preachers do.

I led in the altar call, and I led the song, Just As I Am.
