Junior Achievement

Well, your local ones, we give a lot of money to the local fire departments and things like that.

But Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Junior Achievement, The United Way is obviously a big one.

So the Humane Society, there's a ton of them.

Absolutely.

I think what states can do, or even what financial educators can do, is find ways to partner with their local school district, to partner with states.

We already have nonprofits out there like Junior Achievement and others who have been committed for a long time to financial literacy lessons from K through 12.

But I think we have an opportunity here to incorporate not just financial literacy lessons that help build upon the basis that are taught in the school districts, but we can also incorporate career exploration because a lot of people don't pay attention to how their career choice after high school directly impacts their finances.

And so my goal is to continue to advocate locally and at the state level to make sure we're incorporating career exploration along with financial literacy so that students can tie in the information that they're getting about finances to their future.

And I know personally, I did not see that with my son.

And so I think, you know, we all as financial counselors, certified financial counselors can really serve our state well by just volunteering our time and advocating for a more robust curriculum that will allow them to truly be prepared to manage their finances and not just after high school, but during high school.

And so by partnering with local schools, community organizations like Junior Achievement, or even starting your own initiative, it will help make sure that the teachers are not overburdened because many of them are not certified financial counselors, if any.

And so it is important that we bring our perspective to them to ensure that they're providing the best curriculum and the best exposure to financial education for our students.

He was already governor, and we met at a charity event.

I believe it was Junior Achievement, where I had been asked to speak.

My business at that time was probably about 10 or 12 years old.

I started when I was very young, but my record company was starting to do pretty good, and doing pretty well.

And they had invited me to speak to the student.

Junior Achievement is an organization that brings the free enterprise system into the schools.

A lot of our schools don't teach private enterprise and free enterprise, particularly in the fourth and fifth grades.

And it's pretty important to kind of have an alternative there and to let the kids to have an organization like Junior Achievement that comes into the schools and lets these kids know that socialism is not our future.

Junior Achievement Central Carolinas has been teaching local teens how to be adults for more than six decades.

And as you might imagine, their methods have changed a bit over the years.

An organization that I know very personally and am involved with, so this will be a great conversation.

I taught a class called Junior Achievement from kindergarten through sixth grade.

But I wanted my kids to know that mom was never too busy for them.

I remind myself that my purpose has to be greater than the pain.
