That's very telling that he had her do that.

um so in this film it's about a heist it's a very simple film it's told it's narrative narrated by a voiceover and it's some of the scenes are retold through different characters point of view but a lot of the sets are public areas so the racetrack people are constantly visually divided by architecture in these sets you can see the lockers or the instrument cases or boxes or even the tellers have the bars around them.

There's a contrast between the documentary footage that is used of the real Bay Meadows racetrack and the studio interiors.

So there's a lot to look at in a sense that Now, this to me is a set.

I know it's weird to talk about because I don't really know because there's no interviews, but it's a long cashier windows, probably 20 cashier windows, and they're behind the bars and There's a steps up above the cashiers where they're putting the race information.

There's a lot of negative space.

And I would say in all of Kubrick's films, he is taking advantage of negative space, using the sets, using the architecture to tell his story.

That is a common thread through all of his films.

Like extraordinary.

But I think the most beautiful part was knowing Kip Mesereau, who was a woodworker and he loved Julia Morgan like I love Julia Morgan.

And I said, could you come and take a look at this plumbing shop that was in the house? And he came over, and he drew a picture of the whole building as he imagined it.

And ultimately, we figured out how to get the money, and he designed all the woodwork.

And all of the above have been part of Chez Panisse really since the beginning.

Well, the ripples are amazing.

You know, I'm wondering, you know, we're talking about Berkeley arts and crafts, Julia Morgan style architecture, but also combining it with this organic farmer, farm fresh food.

It's a little bit like in Berkeley.

There is this woman's, or right now it's not woman's, designed by Julia Morgan.

Actually, it's a female figure, but instead of painting the eyes, the feature is a piece of paper cut out.

That's right, yeah.

So my other dinner guest is Julia Morgan.

Because I feel like as a female California photographer, I would be remiss if I didn't mention Julia Morgan.

She was the first female architect that was licensed in California.

She went to Berkeley for, you know, her training.

Cal Poly or California Polytechnic State University is right here.

It's one of the best engineering schools in the country, great with one of the few remaining architecture schools in the country, as well as all the other liberal arts that they carry there.

But this is a college town, considered one of the better college towns in America.

There are bars, gelato shops, you know, retail shops, places where you can get T-shirts and you name it.
