Blues in the Bottle was originally recorded by Prince Albert Hunt in Texas in 1928.

Uh, I originally came across this song actually from a recording from the 1960s by Jim Kweskin and the Jug Band.

But, um, between those two versions of the song, I, uh, have sort of crafted my own little way to do it.

I mean, there's just so many branches to American traditional music, and, um, I've sort of, uh, gravitated towards blues and jazz, and then this other music called jug band music.

Mm-hmm.

True, it's not a vintage shellac record from the 20s or 30s, but it's so much more fun.

That was Jim Queskin and the Jug Band, who were popular when I was growing up in the 1960s.

They recorded Carried Water for the Elephant as the circus song on their final album, Garden of Joy, made in 1967, just before they disbanded.

The Discography of American Historical Recordings credits the song Leroy Carr, but the Reprise record label and other sources credit Guernsey and Thompson.
