On February 3rd, 1941, Lux Radio Theater brought its 293 episode to CBS with Rebecca.

Adapted from the 1940 Selznick International Pictures film, itself drawn from Daphne du Maurier's novel, it stars Ronald Coleman as Maxime de Winter, Ida Lupino as the second Mrs. de Winter, and Judith Anderson as Mrs. Danvers.

A shy young bride arrives at Manderley, the De Winter family's seaside estate in England, where the memory of Maxim's first wife remains close at hand.

Philip MacDonald, George Wells, and Michael Hogan prepared the radio adaptation, with Sanford Barnett directing.

The scene of this drama is Mandalay, the great stone manor house high on a cliff above the restless sea.

You'll hear Ronald Coleman as Maxim de Winter, Judith Anderson as Mrs. Danvers, and Ida Lupino as the woman whose name we do not know.

And he's just the right age to get away with seducing a woman older than him and much younger than him.

And to that point as well, we have to bring up Judith Anderson as Anne,

who is such a bitch and you hate

her so much.

oh my god i have been obsessed with judith anderson's career ever since rebecca because she is she is the mrs danvers like i don't care how many other versions of rebecca there are she she is the mrs danvers and yeah she just nails that role and and honestly that that scene where you know she kind of corners laura and it's sort of like you know i'm completely capable of murder so is shelby but you know it's cool i just want you to know that you know we're capable of murder and And it's just like, it's just such a great kind of threat while feeling like completely, you know, appropriate to this like weird sort of, you know, party drawing room setting.

Because, you know, she's just impeccably polite the whole time she's basically threatening her niece.

And she's putting on lipstick the entire time, too, which is so interesting because it's, again, a very sex, a coded sexual thing.

Judith Anderson as the formidable Mrs Danvers and Joan Fontaine as the second Mrs de Winter.

Mrs Danvers is now the inspiration for a new novel by Rose Tremaine called The Housekeeper, which imagines a kind of backstory for Mrs Danvers.

There is passion, mystery and a love affair between the mysterious Polish-Jewish housekeeper and Daphne du Maurier herself.

He pointed out that in a way that I thought was I don't know how I feel about this.

This is really weird because I agree with what Judith Anderson decides to do.

Dame Judith Anderson, by the way, in this movie, Mrs. Danvers herself.

Sherman reportedly said that any time Peter Lorre exited Judith Anderson's dressing room while making the movie, he would pretend to zip up his fly.

uh, this quote unquote joke resulted in Anderson, uh, going after him with a hairbrush when she found out what he was doing.

And I'm like, you know what? Good.

We were doing the plot notes with him too.

Um, one actor that Sherman did have a little difficulty with was Lori.

When she gets there, uh, to this grand estate, uh, she learns that, uh, the, you know, specter of, uh, his first wife, Rebecca, looms large, uh, over, over everything.

Uh, and her memory is carried on, uh, particularly by Mrs. Danvers, played by Judith Anderson, uh, who is the housekeeper, I guess like chief housekeeper, um, that, uh, kind of keeps the whole show running and was a very close friend and confidant, uh, and maybe more if you read into it, of Rebecca.

Um, you've also got Jack Favell, uh, played by George Sanders, who is, uh, Rebecca's cousin and also enters the fray later on.

But essentially, Mrs. de Winter goes to live at the Manderley.

It was more the things happening around it.

Um, but I think, uh, a lot of her stuff at the Manderley was really good, where she's kind of, um, you know, trying her best to make this marriage work, and, uh, she ke- seems to, you know, keep hitting stumbling blocks when it comes to Rebecca or putting her foot wrong.

Uh, and then especially a lot of her interactions with Mrs. Danvers, and Judith Anderson I think was, was really good.

Um, Mrs. Danvers k- naturally, well, naturally unfairly hates the new Mrs. de Winter.

Hamlet, as the story goes, was a boy.

And yet, here is Judith Anderson playing the part of Hamlet tonight.

It's not alone.
