Tell me about your group, first of all, Joy.

We started out as the pickleball WhatsApp of the Altadena Country Club, where I was the admin.

And the night of the fire, at 6.24 on January 7th of last year, somebody typed into our WhatsApp that there was a fire in the mountain.

And immediately, the place that we used to just arrange games and share a little smack talk became our emergency evacuation network.

because there were no public evacuation alerts at the time.

And we started tracking where the fire was based on who could see it from their homes.

We started calling everyone that we knew in harm's way.

Tell me what you think of the deal that was made.

this bill does is it stops

the governor's utility bailout that he has been secretly seeking for the last few weeks.

Basically, what he was looking for was these massive multi-billion dollar shifts in liability for future catastrophic wildfires away from these three utilities and onto future victims, future insurance policyholders, future California taxpayers.

And what the legislature has done here is stopped that entire utility bailout and only left in a few relatively minor provisions of the governor's original bailout proposal.

How can we do even more? So what happened now that changed? What did the survivors get out of this new bill that's going to offer some more protections than before?

Right.

So this was the governor's secret bailout proposal.

He was planning to introduce it in August.

Oh, man.

That is how that multi-billion dollar transfer of wealth happened from California families to these three companies, and it's happening again.

It is now the end of the legislative session.

The governor's office has been negotiating the biggest ever, uh, bailout for these three companies.

It's multi-billions of dollars.

It would cripple Eaton fire survivors because it could transfer, it could basically obliterate Edison's liability for having to pay for our damages.

And, um, and he still refuses to show anyone the language.

Gosh.

How does your group feel about those things coming through?

That's exactly right.

I so appreciate your bringing, shining a light on what is exactly going on with these repeated bailouts What is going on is that there are three electric monopolies in California, Edison being one of them, that repeatedly cause catastrophic fires.

So this is not our first time at the rodeo here with the Eaton fire and even Edison.

Edison, as you may recall, was the cause of the Woolsey fire back in 2018, also in Los Angeles County.

And, um, And so this finding of fault of Edison by County of Los Angeles is something that we all knew for 18 months.

The world has known forever that Edison was the cause of this fire.

And Joy, some of the suggestions you've made about what's going on in Sacramento, they've not been... confirmed they've not been denied by the governor's office the governor's office has confirmed that it is discussing wildfire recovery and catastrophic risk with lawmakers as you suggested there but what should be the outcome here what is it that you think is the right answer that should come out of sacramento as it relates to these utility companies and holding them accountable for their roles in these these disastrous fires

Each time we wrote a letter to Department of Insurance, they change a new adjuster, and we are sick of tired to have to start all over again.

We have over 10,000 members across Eaton and Palisades burn zones, and, um, we work to connect survivors with one another and to vital resources.

We grow survivor voice and leadership by keeping survivor voices in the media.

So news reporters often call us when they want survivor voices for whatever story they're working on.

And then we're also building coalitions to secure the billions of dollars that are needed for this recovery, and that we work on from insurance, from the utility that burned down our community in the first place, Edison, and finally from the federal government.
