... is, is chronological in, in terms of if you think, okay, there was James and, um, Joses, uh, James and Joses and Simon and Jude as brothers-

... and there were at least two sisters, Mary and Salome, um, later remembered as Mary Salome.

When the Sabbath had come, he began to teach in the synagogue.

And many hearing him were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things?" And, "What is the wisdom that is given to this man that such mighty works come about by his hands? Isn't this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James, Joses, Judah, and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" So they were offended at him.

Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country and among his own relatives and in his own house." He could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them.

He marveled because of their unbelief.

Let's see whether Elijah comes to take him down." Jesus cried out with a loud voice and gave up the spirit.

The veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom.

When the centurion who stood by opposite him saw that he cried out like this and breathed his last, he said, "Truly, this man was the Son of God." There were also women watching from afar, among whom were both Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome, who when he was in Galilee followed him and served him, and many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

When evening had now come, because it was the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member who also himself was looking for God's kingdom, came.

There were also women watching from a distance.

Among them were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James, the younger, and of Joses, and Salome.

When he was in Galilee, they had followed him and given him support.

Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were there too.

And so most likely, my guess is, and this is just guess, James is probably late teenager at this point, maybe early 20s.

Joses is another word for Joseph, and Judas is the author of the book of Jude, and we don't know anything about Simon.

These guys are probably somewhere between, I don't know, 12 and 25.

That would be my guess.

They mention Joseph, his legal earthly father, in the infancy narratives.

They explicitly mention James, Joses, Judas, and Simon, his physical half-brothers, and they even mention that he had half-sisters as well.

Right.

I'm thinking of Mark 6, where Jesus goes back to his hometown of Nazareth, and the townspeople are actually offended by him.

Yes, the synagogue scene.

Yeah, they say, "Isn't this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joses?" They literally identify him by his family matrix.

And notice who is completely missing from that hometown identification.

[laughs] In Mark 6:2: And when the Sabbath was come, he began to teach in the synagogue and many hearing him were astonished saying, "From whence has this man these things? And what wisdom is this that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? And what wisdom is this that is given unto him that such mighty works are wrought by his hands? Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joses and Judah and Simon?" Are these not his sisters here with us? And they were offended.

And Jesus said unto them, "A prophet is not without honor." Is not what? Without honor.

Without honor.

But he's making the comparison to his immediate family, w- his mother, his brothers, and his sisters.

Matthew 13:54-58, "Coming into his own country, he taught them in their synagogues, so they were astonished and said, 'Where did this man get his wisdom and these mighty works? Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother called Mary? Aren't his brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? Aren't all of his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?' They were offended by him.

But Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is not without accept, uh, honor except in his own country and in his own house.' He didn't do many mighty works there because of their unbelief." I think this is a major passage in this case, um, if you look at it, right? Because here's what, what he's saying, a couple things.

His mother is Mary.

Again, this is a parallel to Ma- to Matthew.

"Isn't this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James, Joses, uh, Judas, uh, and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" They were offended at him.
