The Phenacoscope was invented by Joseph Plateau and Simon Stamper around 1832, which utilized a spinning disc with sequential images viewed through slits in a mirror, and there are some controversies of the actual inventor from these two gentlemen, as it's often believed it was just invented at the same time by these two separate people.

So the phonakistoscope was the first widespread animation device capable of creating a fluid illusion of motion.

And it was regarded as a crucial stepping stone towards the modern motion picture and film industry.

But if the number of pictures and slits differ even slightly, the animation appears to drift either forward or backward relative to the spin.

And unlike later devices like the Zoetrope, which we'll discuss in a minute, the standard phonakistoscopes were typically designed for one viewer at a time.

And like we stated before, the phonakistoscope was invented simultaneously around December 1832 by two independent researchers, Joseph Plateau and Simon Stamfer.

And Joseph Plateau was a physicist from Belgium who drew inspiration from earlier optical experiments, including Peter Mark Roget's writing on wheel spokes.
