BORO'S BEST WINDOW IN A DECADE!? Reviewing Boro's 26/27 Summer Window! | Project Boro Podcast #198

Well, Will Langshire obviously is one of the best bits of business we've done in many years, isn't he? I'm just used to Middlesbrough just being a striker's graveyard where they'll bang goals in left, right and centre and we'll bring them here and we'll just ruin them.
S
65:19speaker_2GUEST
Post-Eindhoven, we've had Alves, Sambalonga, Jordan Rhodes.
S
65:25speaker_2GUEST
Bring them here, we'll ruin them and we'll ruin their careers to boot as well.
S

For this lad to come in and do what he's done already is just brilliant.

I, I remember James Marriott going on national television and going, "Hey, do you remember Jordan Rhodes? Well, he's back." We never saw him again.

and other deals as well, that is going to make Borough really competitive in January as well.
C
24:24ChrisHOST
It's not just the summer, obviously the bulk of work goes into that, but January can be, as we've seen the Gaston Ramirez's, the Jordan Rhodes, what we lacked in last season's January window.
C
24:39ChrisHOST
You've got that to think about as well.
N
24:41NathanHOST
Yeah, totally.

For my money, I think if we've learned anything from the last striker who we pined over, came and ultimately it didn't work out, I think that's probably a story best left untold now and just kind of leave it as it is.
M
11:01Matt JohnsonHOST
Yeah, I mean, when you were saying about that striker, there's just so much pressure on it, it would have been Jordan Rhodes on steroids, wouldn't it? If you go back to that time, I know obviously everybody's scarred by what happened with Jordan Rhodes, but if you go back to that time when we signed him, the pressure that was on that lad every single game to deliver, because we had seen it every game that he played against Sheffield Wednesday.
M
11:25Matt JohnsonHOST
The fact that his dad worked at the club, the fact that he'd spoke about his affection for the club in, you know, even when he was playing for Huddersfield and Blackburn and he come through the door and Jamie Vardy is a totally different personality.
M
11:37Matt JohnsonHOST
I personally, for my money, think he would have been able to deal with that pressure because he's played, you know, international football.

You know, he showed with Derby and stuff in the past that he's just a bit of an animal at points, and like you say, when he's fit and sharp, he's quite scary.

When we had Jordan Rhodes, and I'm sure you remember the experience of having Jordan Rhodes play against you a couple of times, especially for us, but... you can't and I don't think there's many players in the EFL now that have those sort of instincts and he's certainly up there in my opinion with someone who just knows where the goal is and he's a raw not say raw but he's the raw striker that you want isn't it and no one that really does a lot more than know where the net is and I think he's got like 22 goals nearly 30 games for you now isn't it so um he's got a freakishly good record and you know he'll want to build on that for sure and go for that cordon boot because he's you know already started like a house on fire so interesting to see how he'll how he'll get on but um i want to move on now to other players other than jack murray i know you've mentioned some key signings um i'm still surprised the keeper is still there perera because i think he's an exceptional talent any reason why he's still there and not been picked up previously but Other than him, who I really like, talk to me about who your other key players are.
M
21:37MattGUEST
Yeah, well, just quick on Joel Pereira.
M

I think it's just because he's a bit inconsistent.

Strelick had been injured and he'd just come back and we'd spent £6-7 million on him in the previous window.
J
10:10Jamie DalgarnoGUEST
but what Gibson you know this transfer window has reminded me heavily of the last time we got to the playoff final under Itar Karanka and we went for it in the summer you know we bought him and even in the winter in the January transfer window bringing the legs of Jordan Rhodes you know to see us over the line he really went for it through that transfer window following the playoff final at Wembley And I feel he's gone again.
J
10:36Jamie DalgarnoGUEST
I feel like he's got the boot between his teeth.

Miller's obviously won now but I don't think he gets I don't think it's as big I think he should be in the next squad he's probably won more for future episodes but I've really liked him this season but if we're going with I don't know because there's a couple of strikers I think we're probably maybe going
A
75:17Andy BargeHOST
to we'll probably have to tie them in together we'll go through the strikers as well then so we can make a decision on all of them again I'll just throw them at you Jack Harper Stephen Fletcher from when he was out of the squad with Levine there was clamour for him to come back in Ross McCormack heavy heavy clamour for Ross McCormack Lee Griffiths he was also on the receiving end of it that makes it sound like a bad thing but it was not Jordan Rhodes could be the king of clamour and Lauren Shankland for the last 3-4 years has been right up there and as well as that we've got a few shouts from back in the day a Facebook comment said Willie Pettigrew who played for Motherwell I think it was for years and then Dundee United in the 70s and 80s as well He had five caps, so he kind of got a chance.
A
76:14Andy BargeHOST
And again, I'm not sure how the clamour developed, but he wasn't capped after he was 23.
A
76:20Andy BargeHOST
So I would imagine that throughout his 20s, it would have continued.
A
77:36Andy BargeHOST
I think that Gannon Doak probably should be in.
A
77:39Andy BargeHOST
So then you're looking at one more space.
A
77:42Andy BargeHOST
I probably think that Shankland is beneath Ross McCormack and Jordan Rhodes for clamour level.
A
77:51Alan RiskGUEST
Well, I'm thinking about, so McCormack, he was scoring a ton of goals for Leeds, etc.

As much as Raul's a hero and is a fantastic footballer, when you're looking over a 46-game season and you factor in that he's 35 years of age now and all those little things, Are we going to get 43 starts out of him? No, we're not.
L
41:57LukeGUEST
Armstrong, yeah, he's got Jordan Rhodes syndrome.
L

Brilliant in the Championship, not at the level for the Prem.
L

So, yeah, he's a good backup option.
