Yeah, I was actually representing New Zealand in hockey, so turf hockey for, like, under-23s and 19s, and had, like, a big engine, so I was doing relatively a lot of running and doing a little bit of cross-country, but mostly mountain biking, actually.
H
30:11Hayden WildeGUEST
I was doing the New Zealand Mountain Bike World Cup, so racing against some of the top New Zealand athletes, like Anton Cooper and Samuel Gaze, who have won Commonwealth Games gold and silver medals, and... all of that's in bento olympics so like racing against those guys back in the day and then my mate just said oh do you want to do a triathlon you know you're strong on the bike and you're strong on the run and then i couldn't i haven't i've never swum when i was a kid all i did was jump off the wharf with my brothers and do bombs and that was really a bit about it and then just started just started swimming and i was shocking hey like i was i don't know i think i was i think i did like my 1500 meters in 29 minutes or 28 minutes or something and uh and then to the next tier and that's when i kind of started triathlon was actually the off-road stuff so next tier is mountain biking trail running and and swimming um and then went to the world champs there and kind of got to the top of that um that sport at my my my i guess age and realised there wasn't a path to the Olympics so that's when I made the switch in 2016 when I actually watched the Rio Olympics and yeah watched obviously the Brownlee brothers dominate and yeah that was kind of my first I guess insight to you know triathlon in a sense I actually didn't know who did it or what it was all about and kind of got into it from there to be honest
P
31:37Paula RadcliffeHOST
And then that was a quick, quick path up through those two Olympic medals, as you talked about, running that 27 minutes.
P
31:43Paula RadcliffeHOST
So let's then go to this latest world.

It was like the old kind of Johnny Brownlee thing at that triathlon years ago where he sort of was winning and then like 50 meters from the line sort of completely like blacked out and clapped.

Now, pairs or partnerships or double acts are well known in different parts of our society.
D
1:57Dave RichardsHOST
So if you think of sport if you think of partnerships or double acts in sport there are some ones that spring very easily to mind so it might be Torval and Dean it might be the Brownlee brothers and their particular efforts to help one another out when they were tired at the end of the decathlon or the triathletes that they were they were they were doing more locally there were the two Murray brothers one of whom was exceptional at tennis and one who wasn't quite as good And I think there was even a third one who is even worse.
D
2:30Dave RichardsHOST
In football, there were the Charlton brothers, Bobby and Jackie.
D
