And I'm going to write something that uses the mechanisms of the genre.

What do we see on the front cover, right? We see parrots and a monkey and a Jolly Roger and a pineapple, right? I mean, these are the iconic cliches of the genre.

And he's going to take that, right, even to the point where it's pirates with an exclamation mark.

So he's going to take that and he's going to say, I know, I'm aware that this is a genre and that it's a genre with cliches and norms and expectations.

Hourglasses meant that time was running out.

Some took to the more peaceful but less lucrative ways of ordinary commerce.

Others were absorbed into the fishing fleets, and a few of the more reckless hoisted Jolly Roger at the mizen and the bloody flag at the main, declaring a private war on their own account against the whole human race.

With mixed crews recruited from every nation, they scoured the seas, disappearing occasionally to careen in some lonely inlet or putting in for a debauch at some outlying port, where they dazzled the inhabitants by their lavishness and horrified them by their brutalities.

On the Coromandel Coast, at Madagascar, in the African waters, and above all in the West Indian and American seas, the pirates were a constant menace.

"What are you gonna do with me?" asked Cradock.

"Come on deck and you'll see." The sailor seized him by the arm and dragged him roughly to the foot of the companion.

I feel like sometimes it's a pirate.

Sometimes it's also the Jolly Roger flag, isn't it? I feel like they kind of have two logos.

So it's either that swashbuckling-looking pirate guy, that buccaneer, or it's the pirate flag with the skull and crossbones on it.

It's swords.

The advent of the telegraph and of steam-driven ships settled forever the account of the pirates, except in China, when even to this day accounts reach us through the press of piratical enterprises.
