And I chose this groove not only because of sampling and its influence on modern music, but also modern drumming, dude.

I remember, like, being in college and loving Jojo Mayer.

Yeah.

And he was one of the first people trying to take electronic music and bring it back to acoustic stuff.

Right? Electronic music was taking acoustic stuff and sampling it, and now the musicians are like, oh, let's take that and play it live.

and it's just an exciting groove.

And so many of my favorite drummers, like Jojo Mayer, they were taking what they were hearing around at the time, which a lot of it was electronically inspired or produced, and trying to recreate it.

Like, shout outs to DeAnthony Parks, Mark Juliana, Chris Daddy Dave, all these people were just influenced by the modern music, hip hop, electronic at the time, and then brought it to modern jazz or whatever it is, really.

But that's the... kind of the classic Jojo Meier OC2.

that you'll have heard me, Tim LaFave, John Davis, Yossi Fine, anyone who's been associated with Nerve, with Jojo Mayer's band, have that setting.

And because MXR modeled one of my 1982 Japanese OC2s to make the vintage bass octave, it's the closest thing I've really heard in terms of sound and feel to the sound I'm so used to from that old pedal.

and touring with a new like a modern build so much more confidence that I can have in that that it's not going to die on me and you know I'm not taking a crazy expensive vintage pedal out on the road plus it's a sort of one of those micro chassis things so it's a lot smaller in terms of its footprint so that's the first mono pedal I have the Mantic Hulk and actually what you're hearing there sort of granular bleeping and blooping in the background is not from the hulk at all it is an error it's a glitch um that happens even when this next pedal is disengaged i have no idea why it happens sometimes it really annoys me and sometimes it's absolutely perfect for the moment that there's this extra texture in there but the mantic is basically a sub harmonic in that you know fx32 the the dod meatbox kind of world but to me it crushes both the original and the reissue of the meat box.

Great guy, great drummer.

He told me about this drummer named Jojo Mayer back in the day and in this record that he was on by a band called Screaming Headless Torsos, which if you're not familiar, it sounds like a death metal band, but it's the coolest funk fusion stuff ever.

And when he told me about that record and then a handful of other artists, I really started going down this like, really dynamic, uh, much more layered style of drumming and music that I had never really been exposed to before.

And it just kind of took everything else that I had played and allowed me to look at it from a different sort of angle because it was through that, um, like through that record, which from Screaming Headless Forest was that record's called 1995.
