There was Johnny Cake, hot and yellow and melting in your mouth.

Strawberry jam that tasted almost as good as the fresh fruit itself.

Ginger cake, dark and rich and spicy.

In that skill all night.

Used to cook Johnny cakes back in the day.

Johnny Cakes? Can I? Like this? Off the door, we make dough.

I gotta take that.

I seen y'all clean our hands.

I've seen them, you know, added to dishes or added to like a plate, a sort of a fun little nostalgic note on a plate.

But I've seen more interesting stuff being done with traditional foods like Johnny Cakes, you know, using them as the base for caviar, you know, instead of blini or something like that.

But baked beans, there's so much what they are, you know, you can't like really put them in a cylinder and make them look sexy.

So yeah, they're earthy, hearty foods.

I think that's like a growth area for the city to do some imaginative stuff with these classic foods.

I mean, Puritan and Company in Cambridge is another restaurant that has drawn some inspiration from old New England foods.

They were the restaurant I was referring to when I was talking about like doing cool stuff with Johnny Cakes.

I mean, it's very much a farm to table restaurant, but they do play around with classic stuff.

When his mother put it to him to take the half cake with her blessing, he took it in preference to having the whole with her malison, and yet the half was bigger than what the other lad had got.

So he went away on his journey, and after he had travelled a far way, he met with an old woman that asked him if he would give her a bit of his johnny cake.

And he said, I will gladly do that.

And so he gave her a piece of the johnny cake, and for that she gave him a magical wand, that she might yet be of service to him, if he took care to use it rightly.

Then the old woman, who was a fairy, told him a great deal that would happen to him, and what he ought to do in all circumstances.

And after that she vanished in an instant out of his sight.

CHAPTER XXVIII.

JOHNNY CAKE Once upon a time there was an old man and an old woman and a little boy.

One morning the old woman made a johnny cake and put it in the oven to bake.

You watch the johnny cake while your father and I go out to work in the garden.

So the old man and the old woman went out and began to hoe potatoes and left the little boy to tend the oven.

But he didn't watch it all the time.

And all of a sudden he heard a noise and he looked up and the oven door popped open and out of the oven jumped Johnny Cake and went rolling along end over end towards the open door of the house.

The little boy ran to shut the door, but Johnny Cake was too quick for him, and rolled through the door, down the steps, and out into the road long before the little boy could catch him.
