Uh, and they were screaming and everything.

So, so what happened, I excha- I, I wrote my name on the tabs.

I'm not, not the s- you got the wrong person.

I'm, um, I, uh, I've s- s- somebody, somebody brought me a bag of crisps on stage for a laugh, so, so I could eat 'cause they were all screaming at the...

And then I threw them a crisp.

The next I'm getting sweets thrown at me and stuff thrown at me, and we've got this great exchange, right? [laughs] And I li- I held them for 28 minutes, screaming kids, but I held them and actually got them moving with me towards the end, and I said, "Well, I won't keep you any longer." [laughs] And then that was done.

... to get a joke.

What, what keeps you curious now and, and your enthusiasms alive?

Everything, I think.

I, I'm a happier man in, in, in my office, in my library really.

As, as Cicero said, [laughs] if you have a garden and an office or a garden and a library, you have everything in life you need.

And I feel that way now.

I'm in my office every day, and I create work if there's no work to be done, and I'm enjoying it tremendously.

I'm reviewing all the things I've done, and I think that's what the secret of the U3A is.

Well, uh, well, you always brought a sense of fun to learning, so how important do you think-

How on Earth did you get to play Ringo Starr's drum kit?

Well, that was...

I, I went to Butlin's in nine- in 1960 after I'd had three years in the forces, and it was my aim because I'd seen, when I was 14, I'd seen Des O'Connor as a redcoat, saw his career after that, and I thought, "That's the way." So immediately I was determined I'd go to Butlin's.

And because of, I, believe it or not, I'm actually shy.

I was actually shy coming forward, so I needed some impetus and some, some room and some time to get confidence to, to, to turn into a pro comedian.

So it wasn't until '64 I did that, with three years at Butlin's, which is smile school, so the smile is enduring.

My wife did one season.
