Jeanne AllenGUEST

When people who have come before you or had some of those same challenges say, "Ah, there's a different way to do that," or, "Have you thought about this different approach?" I remember, for example, uh, John Walton, uh, the late John Walton, who was, uh, the, one of the sons of Sam Walton, Walmart fortune, and so humble, so down to earth, was captivated by education, freedom, and opportunity.
Jeanne AllenGUEST
5:15
Felt deeply for people who didn't have, uh, resources to be able to get their own education.
Jeanne AllenGUEST

Darla RomfoGUEST
22:49
So we were founded in 1998 by two gentlemen, Teddy Forsman and John Walton, and they started out to give 40,000 scholarships for four years.
Darla RomfoGUEST
22:57
They had 1,250,000 applications for the 40,000 scholarships, basically making this big, loud statement that there are a lot of people that weren't happy with what they were getting in education, that the school they were assigned to by zip code wasn't working for them.
Darla RomfoGUEST

Fast forward, in the middle of it, the gentleman decided, you know what, we have to keep doing this because there's a lot of kids out there that need another alternative to their assigned public school.
Fritz SteigerGUEST

Like Hillsdale College would be one in the education field.
Fritz SteigerGUEST
20:22
And I put a QR code in there just for people that wanna learn more about, uh, education, or maybe it's education reform with the American Federation of Children, which is the, the group that John Walton and I started back in, in, uh, 1994 to give parents more choice in education.
Fritz SteigerGUEST
20:40
And so there's a QR code.
Fritz SteigerGUEST
20:41
And, and so I, I wanna be able to give people more than just my, the book.

And in 1984 or 1990...
Fritz SteigerGUEST
26:50
It was 1993, John Walton, Sam's second oldest son, was in California, uh, living in San Diego, and he called me up one day.
Fritz SteigerGUEST
27:00
And I didn't know John very well.
Kevin GentryHOST

In your judgment, what does success look like with a family, with a child, as a result of what you do on a daily basis? I'm sure you've got lots of stories, but when you do what you try to do, what makes you particularly happy?
Darla RomfoGUEST
3:23
So when I came to this, first of all, I want to give a lot of credit to two very visionary men, John Walton and Teddy Forsman.
Darla RomfoGUEST
3:30
I feel like I'm just trying to facilitate a much grander, bigger vision that these two men brought to life and put their money behind.
Darla RomfoGUEST
3:37
And they really had the idea.
Darla RomfoGUEST
3:58
And he said, well, if you don't get the first things right, everything else falls apart.
Darla RomfoGUEST
4:02
And the first thing about CSF was that families are the first educators of their children.
Darla RomfoGUEST
4:06
John Walton, when he would go to a school and I went to many schools with him to visit families.
Darla RomfoGUEST
