The production didn't just go out and find a generic leading man.

Peter James has been very vocal about the fact that when he was originally conceiving the character of Roy Grace in his mind, years before the books were even published, he literally envisioned John Simm in the role.

See, I love when that happens.

It means the DNA of the actor is already kind of baked into the prose.

But unlike the vibrant, tight-knit family home that Natalie grew up in, Stephen's personal life was filled with extensive isolation, tragedy, as well as rejection.
