He's best known for winning two Pulitzer Prizes in a row, the only novelist ever to do that, for The Underground Railroad and The Nickel Boys.

Then he changed keys and wrote three crime novels centering on Harlem and the furniture store owner Ray Carney, who also works part-time as a fence, dealing with stolen jewelry and watches out of his back room, but only when he needs to.
