John Patitucci

Today, as an established professional musician, Andrew still pays homage to the contributions of these two artists and his greatest personal influences.

Andrew has performed and studied with notable artists including Esperanza Spalding, Barry Harris, John Patitucci, Brian Blade, Larnell Lewis, Terry Lynn Carrington, Pat LaBarbera, and Hilario Durant, just to name a few, and played at major festivals such as the Newport Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Panama Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, and the Montreal International Jazz Festival,

among many others.

an award-winning trumpeter, composer, educator, and recent master's graduate of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, Andrew is a very well-respected Canadian musician.

So when I graduated...

the Berkeley Global Jazz Institute in 2017.

When I came back to Toronto, I had an interesting time sort of integrating back into, you know, back into Toronto because I was on this crazy inspiration sort of ride from studying with people like Danilo Perez, Terry Lynn Carrington, John Patitucci, Joe Lovano, and the list goes on and on.

And, And so one of the things that they got me to think about is to figure out what is the sound of the land that you're from? What is the real cultural identity of where you are taking into effect the history of the country? And so...

And so I noticed there wasn't a whole lot of pedagogy, you know, and books written for bass players.

There's a Patitucci book, you know, sort of scales and etudes.

So I went out and I wrote this piece called, pretentiously, La Petite Suite for solo electric bass.

And that was the prelude number one, introducing a little bit of tapping, a little bit of, you know, different techniques.

And we are back.

Rosario Giuliani studied at the El Reficio Conservatory in Frosinone.

Over his career, he's played with names like Charlie Hayden, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Phil Woods, Enrico Piranunzi, Enrico Rava, Fabrizio Bosso, Jeff Tane Watts, Mark Turner, John Patitucci, Kurt Elling, and more.

Among his many recordings, he's made six for the French Dreyfus label since 2000.

In 2013, he released The Golden Circle.

And that is on this album.

It's on the Union, which I ended up recording a year later with Clarence Penn, Philip Dezek and Ruslan Sirota that John Patitucci produced.

We did that in New York, I think, June of 2019.

And because this album had kind of fallen by the wayside, that tune ended up on the Union, a very different version of it.

I've been working on getting this interview with Chris for years, and we both happen to be in China, of all places, at the same time.

Right after this interview, Chris put on an incredible concert with the great John Patitucci on bass and Brian Blade on the drums.

Live jazz may be the single most important art form preserving our humanity in this age of technology and AI.

whatever we had determined or decided, it was, it was on us to make new decisions and see how those went.

I remember talking to Danilo Perez and John Patitucci, and they talked about doing zero gravity with Wayne, you know, and going for the unknown and they called it fear training.

Fear training.

Patitucci, great John Patitucci, live at the Vanguard a week ago, and to me, and he's just like you know like animated i love it i love that people think that i'm like really serious maybe because i maybe i used to be serious maybe i present myself in a serious way but i don't know i like i like to have fun with it

and pat sushi is a great example yeah that's like like i try to channel that john patatucci energy even if i'm sitting in the bass section

yeah definitely you can't really get away with that much though like as a classical player okay
