John MacLeod

It takes place in the early 1990s when Cal graduates from college in the south of Scotland, and he goes home to the Isle of Harris, which is an island in the Outer Hebrides.

And his father, John MacLeod, is a sheep farmer, and he's been beckoned home to help out with his grand- his maternal grandmother, who lives with his father.

There's interesting things about the tenancy of the property, sheep farming, and weaving, and in juxtaposition with his more modern life, you know, where he's got a Walkman and what music he's listening to.

It's, it is really a great time period to have set this novel.

So Cal is queer.

He is really dreading going home because it's so rural, and there's a tremendous amount of gender stereotyping at home and toxic masculinity.

His father is a very faithful, I think, Protestant, like, church member, and so he cannot come out to his father.

There's just incredible expectations for him, and they all d- you know, square up poorly to his real identity.
