So in my memory, a deuteragonist is a character who exists in parallel with the protagonist as opposed to a nemesis or an antagonist who... opposing forces the deuteragonist is kind of a lateral character who is sometimes an ally and sometimes an opponent so for instance John Locke in Lost is the first example that comes to mind where sometimes he is Jack's ally and sometimes he is Jack's enemy whereas Sawyer is Jack's nemesis and I guess like Ben Linus would be his antagonist.
