In '84 at Hampton, I ended up sitting next to two guys.

One worked for a congressman, and one was a lobbyist for the NEA.

And we started talking, and I was a political science major, [clears throat] so we had a lot to talk about.

And, uh, then they say that they started the United States Student Association, and I said, "Hey, I'm a member of the United States Student Association, so we're, we're connected." And they said, "Actually, there's a third guy who helped start it.

He's not here." And I said, "Well, what does he do?" And he's like, "Well, he's chief of staff to a mayor in Pennsylvania." And I said, "I'm from Pennsylvania.

What town?" He goes, "Harrisburg." I said, "I'm from Harrisburg." And, uh, and that's when we came up with the idea to do Grateful Dead Day in Harrisburg, and we wrote this guy a letter, and they, they declared it Grateful Dead Day.

The band sent out Mickey Hart as their delegate to meet the boys.

[upbeat music] There was plenty to do for young Deadheads hanging out at Golden Road HQ.

The Thursday before the Greeks, Blair had a little gathering at his house, 'cause he was doing a story on, uh, Deadhead professionals, people who were in the professional world who were also Deadheads.

You know, lawyers, doctors.

And then this guy, um, uh, an oral surgeon from Birmingham, Alabama, uh, Bernie Bilgan.

And Bernie is, I think he's a month, month older than my mother.

But, um, he is a prankster at heart, and, uh, and we just totally hit it off.

We became fast friends, and we spent that weekend together, and there was all sorts of craziness with- in his life.

The city had announced plans that spring to replace it with apartments.
