John Kiffmeyer

Before they were Green Day, Billy Joe and Mike formed a band called Sweet Children.

The original lineup included drummer John Kiffmeyer, better known as Al Sobrante.

Now, the name Sweet Children sounds almost suspiciously innocent for a punk band, like something you'd expect to see performing at a church picnic.

But these kids were learning their craft.

Not nearly as many know when to shut up.

Trey understands both.

When John Kiffmeyer left Green Day to attend college, Trey joined the band in 1990, and the classic lineup was complete.

Billie Joe Armstrong on guitar and vocals, Mike Dirt on bass, Trey Cool on drums, three guys, one enormous sound rock.

The band's early releases were with the independent record label Lookout Records, including their first album, 39 Slash Smooth, 1990.

For most of the band's career, they have been a power trio, with Cool, who replaced John Kiffmeyer in 1990.

Before the recording of the band's second studio album, Kerplunk.

Kerplunk is the other one I was thinking.
