So Robert Hunter's Sunrise Epiphany, that was intended to be a track actually for a solo album, a project that he was working on for six years.

The original Robert Hunter version of Touch of Gray with Jerry Garcia and bassist John Kahn, that was much slower than the definitive version that The Dead put out.

Garcia and Kahn, who is another trusted collaborator for Garcia, they were helping their friend with a recording of Touch of Gray but it actually never got finished.

Eventually, Jerry asked Robert if he was okay with the Grateful Dead giving the song a whirl.

Garcia's stamina was shot.

During the six-week break between spring and summer tour, he played eight small gigs around the Bay Area with John Kahn, and reportedly some of those sets were four songs, four songs and done.

But when the full band was on stage together, they played like someone set a timer.
